Our Black History topics are perfect for black history month or, in fact, at any time during the school year.

An African adventure (KS1)

A cultural leap to the vast continent of Africa and an exploration of the people, their music, customs and the local flora and fauna.

  • Learning an African chant
  • Acting out a traditional African story
  • Improvising characteristics of African animals
  • Exploring historic African ways of life in different tribes

Learning objectives:

  • To recognise and discuss similarities and differences between the UK and Africa
  • To name the world's seven continents
  • To describe why animals in Africa are suited to their habitat
  • To perform dances using simple movement patterns


Amazing Africa (KS2)

A sweeping journey across the geography and history of Africa illustrated with songs, music and dancing.

Learning objectives:

  • To compare the human and physical geography in Africa
  • To recognise differences between African and British culture
  • To understand the significance of the equator and how it impacts the weather/heat of countries


Black history icons (KS1)

A compassionate workshop about human rights, and the key figures who contributed to racial equality.

  • Jump in a time machine back to 1854, to learn about Mary Seacole's work in hospitals during the Crimean War
  • Re-create the story of Rosa Parks using freeze frames in teams
  • Understand the meaning of segregation and share thoughts about how it would have felt
  • Reflect on Martin Luther King's Speech as a cool down

Learning objectives:

  • To understand what Black History is and why it is celebrated
  • To recognise significant people who have made positive changes to the world


Black history icons (KS2)

The children will be taken on a journey through Black History and come face to face with iconic figures that have devoted their lives to giving the black population equal rights.

  • Learn about Mary Seacole and how she was rejected because of her race
  • Use drama techniques, supported by music, to understand the lives of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King
  • Bring to life characters such as Rosa Parks and improvise scenes from the day of the bus boycott
